Nutrition 101
Nutrition is a very important part of being healthy. The food you bring into your body fuels a variety of different bodily functions. It gives you energy to get through your day and complete your workouts. So many people have tried various different fad diets and programs but find it hard to follow long term. This is because fad diets aren’t sustainable. I don’t want to live my whole life without bread or ice cream. A lifestyle is the way you live throughout your life. We need to be able to be flexible yet still meet our body’s nutrient demands.
One of the problems people who are trying to lose weight deal with is that so many people are eating less calories than what it takes to completely fuel their bodies. This works at first but isn’t sustainable for the long term. It slows down the metabolism and makes it to where they gain weight when they eat the proper amount of nutrients. If you aren’t eating the proper amount of nutrients to fuel your body, it can create a fight or flight response in your body and cause your metabolism to slow down and create stress in your body.
A flexible eating program is based on calories in vs. calories out, but not all calories are created equal. It takes your body more calories to break down protein than it does any other nutrient. This means if we increase our protein, we will naturally increase the number of calories we burn each day. Protein also fuels muscle recovery and makes you feel full. Carbohydrates can be broken into simple and complex. Complex carbs have more fiber. Fiber is important for helping us to feel full, but it also helps our digestion. Fats are important too. We don’t want to have too little or too much fat.
